Stiller show in Latvia – bitter defeat for Austria

Mixed feelings among the Hoffenheim national players: Angelo Stiller had a great evening on Tuesday, leading the DFB's U21s to a 3-1 victory in Latvia with a goal and an assist. In World Cup qualification Group H, Denmark celebrated a dominant 5-0 victory over Israel. Austria, with Christoph Baumgartner and Florian Grillitsch in the starting eleven, were surprisingly beaten 0-1 by Scotland. Armenian international Sargis Adamyan was also not happy after they drew 1-1 with Liechtenstein. tsg-hoffenheim.de looks at the games involving the 16 Hoffenheim players on international duty.

It is a week of firsts for Hoffenheim's players with the German national sides. After the debuts of Angelo Stiller for the U21s and David Raum for the senior side – who was then an unused sub for the 4-0 win against Iceland on Wednesday – TSG could once again celebrate a first goal on Tuesday: Stiller scored in the 3-1 (2-1) victory of the U21s in the European Championship qualifying match in Latvia. In the 42nd minute, he fired in a low shot from 18 metres to make it 2-1, before providing the assist for the 3-1. After the match, Stiller was completely satisfied: "It's a great feeling. Scoring a goal is a bit unusual for me as a defensive midfielder. But I'd happily take a few more in the near future. I'm very happy with my goal." Two other Hoffenheim players also had a great evening – because the TSG debuts didn't stop there: Goalkeeper Luca Philipp also made his first appearance for the U21s, as did Marco John, who was subbed on in the 53rd minute.

Sargis Adamyan was in Armenia's starting eleven, but the 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein was a disappointment for the second place team in qualifying Group J.

Jacob Bruun Larsen remained on the bench on Tuesday evening – and yet the Dane was in a good mood: Denmark beat Israel 5-0 and now have a big gap at the top of Group H with 18 points from six games. Munas Dabbur watched his side's heavy defeat from the bench. After six games, his Israel side lie third in the group on 10 points. Scotland moved into second place on 11 points with a surprising 1-0 victory in Austria. Christoph Baumgartner and Florian Grillitsch – who was replaced in the 77th minute – could not prevent the bitter defeat. Stefan Posch was an unused substitute. Austria are in danger of missing the World Cup as they lie fourth in Group H with only seven points from six matches.

Things are going much better for Croatia and Andrej Kramaric. With the 3-0 win against Slovenia, the TSG star's team leapfrogged Russia to take top spot in Group H. Hoffenheim's record goalscorer was in the starting line-up for the home win.

Melayro Bogarde also celebrated an important victory in qualifying for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship: with the Hoffenheim starlet in the starting line-up, the Netherlands defeated Moldova 3-0.
