My first time: Robert Skov

Robert Skov made his international debut for Denmark on 10 June 2019. Since then, the versatile left-footer has made eight appearances for his country, scoring five goals. This summer will see the 25-year-old participate in a major international tournament for the first time as he joins the Denmark squad for the European Championship. In an interview with SPIELFELD, the Dane spoke about his goals at the EURO, his international debut and playing EURO games in front of fans on home soil.

Robert, you made your international debut for Denmark almost two years ago in a 5-1 victory over Georgia. What did that feel like?
"It was one of the biggest moments of my career. When you're chosen to represent your country, it's the biggest honour as a footballer. It's an extraordinary feeling to play for Denmark. It was one of the best days of my life."

You scored a goal on your second international appearance. Your tally now stands at five goals. But was the first goal something very special?
"The goal obviously means a lot to me. It was just as amazing as my first appearance. I've worked for years in training for moments like that. The fact that I also scored the goal in Gibraltar, where my father used to work, is of course a lovely story. It's nice to cast my mind back to that; it's not an everyday experience."

The European Championship starts in mid-June. It will be your first involvement in a major international tournament. What are your goals?
"We want to win the title. We're not going to go there and say we're happy to be involved. It's always about winning. The team has enormous quality and is in super form. We have big expectations of ourselves. Even though we have a difficult group, we want to achieve the maximum. We'll have to see whether that's really enough for a big triumph."

You'll play your group games in Copenhagen. How much are you looking forward to playing in front of your own fans?
"It's obviously a huge event for a small country like Denmark. There will probably never be a European Championship in my homeland during the rest of my lifetime. There's only one big stadium for an event like that. It's a one-off for us as players. There's also huge excitement among the spectators. There'll only be Danish fans in the stadium who will give us their full support. I'm looking forward to the atmosphere. All of Denmark is looking forward to these matches."

You spent most of last season with TSG playing on the left of defence. This season, you have recently featured in an attacking role. Which position do you see yourself playing at club and international level in the future?
"In attack. That's where I feel the most comfortable and where I can help the team the most. I want assert my claim and go up against the competition. That gives me an extra motivational boost."
