November games behind closed doors

On Wednesday 28 October, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of the federal states announced additional measures to curb the corona pandemic. Football is one of the areas affected.

In view of the dram News atically increasing corona infection figures, the federal and state governments have decided that professional sport will take place without spectators in November.

The restrictions will apply from 2 November, meaning that the match between TSG Hoffenheim and Union Berlin (Monday 2 November) will have to be played behind closed doors. The Chancellor and the heads of government plan to meet again in mid-November to assess the effect of the steps taken and make any further adjustments that may be necessary. The current measures will remain in effect until 30 November, meaning TSG's home games against Slovan Liberec (5 November) and VfB Stuttgart (21 November) will also be held without spectators.

The DFL made the following statement regarding the decision: "The worsening pandemic situation undoubtedly requires additional efforts in all areas of life. Over the past few weeks, the clubs in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 have invested a great deal of effort in developing hygiene concepts to protect stadium spectators effectively and have coordinated these with the responsible local authorities. Based on these concepts, fans and clubs have implemented hygiene and distancing rules in a disciplined manner wherever possible and almost without exception  thus fulfilling their responsibilities. It is therefore regrettable that this is temporarily no longer possible. We hope that the measures taken will have a quick and lasting effect to the benefit of our society."
