DFL releases general schedule for 2020/21

The German Football League (DFL) has published a new general schedule for the 2020/21 season. As previously reported, the Bundesliga will get underway on Friday 18 September 2020. The German Football Association (DFB) has scheduled the first round of the DFB Cup for the preceding weekend (Friday 11 September).

Matchday 13 (18-21 December) will be the last round of Bundesliga fixtures in the calendar year. The 2nd round of the DFB Cup will then follow (22/23 December 2020) before the winter break. The Bundesliga will recommence on the first weekend of January. Matchday 34, the last of the Bundesliga season, is scheduled for 22 May 2021.

The newly released general schedule - including a delayed start date, reduced winter break and three additional rounds of midweek fixtures - follows the model which, in light of the current situation, was favoured by the majority of Bundesliga clubs. An updated general schedule was deemed necessary due to the 2020/21 season being pushed back as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

As 1 May 2021 falls on a Saturday, security authorities have requested that the whole weekend be kept free of Bundesliga and 2 Bundesliga fixtures. As things stand at present, the two DFB Cup semi-finals are scheduled for the first weekend in May, but these dates are still subject to the result of pending consultations.
