Koch: "TSG have enormous quality"

Robin Koch, 23, has established himself as a regular starter for SC Freiburg since joining the club in 2017. Speaking in an interview with achtzehn99.de, the defender discussed Freiburg's start to the season, the match on Sunday (15:30 CET/Live Ticker at achtzehn99.de) and his father Harry.

Robin, you have six points on the board in the Bundesliga this season and are through to the next round of the DFB Cup. How do you assess your start to the campaign?

"In terms of the results alone, the first two matches were obviously super. In footballing terms, however, it didn't go entirely according to plan. We had that bit of luck you need in the Bundesliga on our side."

On the last matchday, you suffered a defeat to 1. FC Cologne in stoppage time. Was that still on your minds over the international break?

"It goes without saying the defeat was very frustrating, since we conceded a goal in the last minute. Unfortunately, we didn't have the same luck on our side we had in the first two games. Obviously it was on our minds for a while, but then we turned our attentions to our next match."

You're away to TSG on Sunday. What kind of match are you expecting?

"I think that it'll be the kind of intense encounter we usually have against Hoffenheim. They're a very strong footballing side with enormous quality. It'll be an awesome match."

Last season, Hoffenheim recorded clear victories in both fixtures. What was that down to and where do you see TSG's strengths?

"On their day, Hoffenheim are capable of beating anyone. The team always have a clear plan and, going forward in particular, they have enormous potential. That was evident in the games against us last season."

Your father Harry made more than 250 appearances in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. He was also a centre-back. Does he sometimes give you tips?

"No, he gives me space in that respect. He knows that everyone needs their own peace and quiet. Only rarely do I go to him with a question. When we're together as a family, we're mostly discussing other topics than football."
