TSG lose narrowly in Frankfurt

TSG Hoffenheim kicked off their 2019/20 campaign with a 1-0 (1-0) defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt. Alfred Schreuder's charges conceded the only goal of the game, which was scored by Martin Hinteregger, after just 36 seconds.

Personnel & tactics:

Alfred Schreuder fielded three new signings on his debut as a Bundesliga head coach: Ihlas Bebou featured up front, while Robert Skov began on the right flank and Sebastian Rudy started in the centre of midfield. The other player in the attacking triumvirate was left-winger Lukas Rupp, who would consistently drop back into midfield. The midfield four consisted of Steven Zuber (left), Dennis Geiger alongside Rudy in the centre and Pavel Kaderabek (right). Shot-stopper Oliver Baumann was protected by a back three of Ermin Bicakcic, Kevin Vogt and Stefan Posch.

Schreuder introduced the next new signing, midfielder Diadie Samassekou, into the fray on 64 minutes as Lukas Rupp made way. The next substitution followed in the 71st minute as Ishak Belfodil came on in place of Dennis Geiger, with the third and final change coming five minutes later when Vincenzo Grifo replaced Skov.

Moment of the match:

Dennis Geiger picked out the far corner with a shot from distance in the 41st minute, but the goal was disallowed by the video assistant referee because Rupp had been standing in an offside position.

Only 36 seconds had been played when the TSG defence was breached for the first time this season, with Hinteregger converting a Kostic corner to put Frankfurt in the lead.

Match highlights

1. Min.

Hinteregger is afforded too much space in the box following a Frankfurt corner and volleys home the opener.

TSG come close to equalising through Skov: Zuber does well down the left flank and spots the Danish forward in plenty of space, but his shot sails narrowly wide of the mark. Shame.

Almost 2-0 there. Kostic breaks through down the left and cuts into the box, but Baumann stays on his feet and comes out on top in the one-on-one battle.

48. Min.

Another stop from the Hoffenheim No. 1: Kamada dribbles into the penalty area and wrong-foots Baumann with his strike, but the shot-stopper is quick to get down and make a strong save.

54. Min.

Kohr wins another aerial battle following a set-piece and, although Baumann does not manage to intervene on this occasion, Posch is on hand to make a goal-line clearance. Pivotal!

88. Min.

Huge chance to restore parity late on when Kaderabek picks out Belfodil in plenty of space with a perfect cross, but he can't generate sufficient contact on the ball and it trickles out of play.
