Personnel and tactics

TSG coach Marco Wildersinn made five changes to the side that suffered a 2-1 defeat at TSV Steinbach on the opening day. Andreas Ludwig was named in the starting XI for the first time since his return to the club last month, replacing the suspended Robin Szarka and wearing the captain's armband in his stead.

Tim Hüttl, Tim Wöhrle, Emilian Lässig and Johannes Bender were the other four new faces to start against Waldhof. TSG started in a 4-3-3 system, with Ludwig the organiser in the middle of the park. New signing Chinedu Ekene sat on the bench for the first time.

SV Waldhof, who were beaten 1-0 by SSV Ulm on the opening day of the season, travelled to Kraichgau with a small squad and only had three outfield players plus goalkeeper Christopher Gäng on the bench. Kevin Conrad, who played for the TSG U23s between 2008 and 2013, wore the captain's armband for the visitors. Waldhof new boy Maurice Hirsch, another former Hoffenheim player, suffered an injury in the 4-0 Cup victory over Spvgg Neckarelz and watched this one from the stands.
