Nagelsmann enters his final season with TSG

Julian Nagelsmann will leave TSG Hoffenheim at the end of the 2018/19 season. The 30-year-old, who took up the post of head coach in February 2016 has triggered an exit clause in his contract, which runs until 30th June 2021.

“It was important for me to work out all the conditions early”, said Nagelsmann, who informed the TSG board of his decision on Wednesday evening. He wanted to be as transparent and honest as possible to avoid any speculation affecting the coming season. “I owe it to everyone who has worked for TSG as well as the fans and players after our historic qualification for the Champions League, not to burden them with speculation and uncertainty about my future. Now everyone knows and we can move on professionally to concentrate on the tasks that matter. Everyone knows that I will go above and beyond for TSG to achieve our ambitious goals until my last minute at the club.” Subsequently, Nagelsmann will answer no questions about his new job or future plans, rather will focus solely on the task at hand with TSG Hoffenheim. “Honesty is always respected in the industry. We have proven that and I hope it will be respected.”

“We are sad to hear Julian’s decision, but look forward to a promising upcoming season with a highly motivated team and honest setup at the club”, said TSG managing director Dr. Peter Görlich, who added, “our plans for the future will be announced over the winter.”

“We can now look back at a century in the Bundesliga and have the prospect of the Champions League ahead of us. That is a massive achievement for a club of our size. Julian has played a big part in the story of our success. We know that we have a lot to thank him for and are aware of the chances the club has opened up for him, as well as the confidence we showed in him”, said co-managing director Frank Briel.

“We knew that there was a contractual possibility of his departure, which is not uncommon in professional football”, said Alexander Rosen. “It says a lot about his character that he showed his cards so early and transparently”, the TSG sporting director continued.

Julian Nagelsmann has been a coach at TSG Hoffenheim for nine years. Between 2008 and 2015, he worked in the youth academy, before becoming first-team assistant coach. In 2014, the man from Oberbayer secured the German championship with the A-Juniors with a 5-0 win at Hannover 96. In February 2016 he was named as Huub Stevens’ successor as the club was battling to avoid relegation. In the following season, the youngest coach in Bundesliga history took TSG to fourth place in the league and led them to into Europe (Champions League playoffs /Europa League). Last season he went one better and qualified for the Champions League group stages after TSG finished third in the table.
