#TSGSCF reaction: "We didn’t create enough space"

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches after Hoffenheim’s 1-1 draw at home to SC Freiburg on matchday 24 in the Bundesliga.

Julian Nagelsmann: “We dealt with pretty much everything in the first half and managed to find a lot of space in midfield in particular. However, we gave the ball away too easily in the final third. Nevertheless, we attacked down the flanks well, but just lacked numbers in the middle to make those attacks count. Usually we only had Adam [Szalai] in the box, and that wasn’t enough to get a goal. Freiburg sat a little deeper after the break, but the timing of our runs wasn’t up to scratch and we weren’t able to take advantage of the extra space. There was the odd chance, but not a clear enough one to be able to say that we ought to have score more goals. We virtually scored Freiburg’s goal ourselves. We’ve essentially thrown away two points today, so I’m not happy.”

Christian Streich (SC Freiburg coach): “We worked to the absolute limit today, but once we won the ball, we didn’t play it out of the back the way we’d hoped, and that meant we didn’t create many chances. We didn’t keep our cool when it mattered. It’s still amazing to me how well my team deals with going behind. That’s why we haven't got too defeats to our name. The team deserves huge credit. We have to improve on the ball though, otherwise we’ll run into problems. I’m not happy with the technical side of things today, but I’m happy with everything else.”

Kevin Akpoguma: “This point feels like a defeat. We really wanted a home win, but we didn’t get it. Freiburg were very solid defensively and we struggled to work the space. We were the better team today, without a doubt, but that doesn’t do us any favours. I have to hold my hand up for the penalty because I gave the ball away in the build-up. Freiburg managed to stop us from playing our game, which forced us to play it across the back as much as we did. It was very, very difficult to create chances.”

Serge Gnabry: “We looked good before the break and kept getting into the final third, but there weren’t enough players in dangerous positions when it counted. We took the lead in the second half, but then we conceded an avoidable goal straight away. That took us out of our stride a little – that shouldn’t be happening. We had a lot of possession and were the better side, but that alone won’t get you three points. We find ourselves taking the lead and then being pegged back too often. We need to bring an end to that. Freiburg kept things very tight at the back and had the right mentality, which made life very difficult for us, but we can only blame ourselves for not winning today.”

Pavel Kaderabek: “We’re not winning enough games lately, despite playing well. We have a lot of the ball and our opponents have sat deep, and sometimes you just have to turn back and start again when you can’t find a way through. That’s just what it’s like when you play against sides who place a lot of value on being defensively solid. We’re lacking incisiveness in attack. We need to score more goals to start winning again.”
