#BSCTSG reaction: “We really wanted to win”

Here’s what the players and coaches had to say after the 1-1 draw between TSG Hoffenheim and Hertha BSC on the Bundesliga’s 21st matchday.

Julian Nagelsmann: “I’m pleased the team’s performance. I think we deserved to win today; the game could well have ended 1-0. Thomas Kraft made an excellent save at the end. The lads really wanted to win today and fought hard right until the 93rd minute. It wasn’t the best spell of the game for us and so we have to live with the point. I can’t say if Nico was offside for the penalty. I never was the best student of the laws of the game (laughs). Anyway, the referee told us that there was nothing wrong with the penalty, because it had changed to a new phase of play. We played with confidence, found solutions and pushed forwards. If we continue like that, we will win games.”

Kevin Vogt: “We didn’t manage to build on our lead after going 1-0 up, unfortunately. With a tiny bit more luck we could have extended our lead today and sealed the game off. However, if we keep playing like this, the momentum will come back to us. We had a good set-up today and we kept our discipline to stick to the plan, which is how we forced Hertha into playing long balls, which we could defend well over long spells of the game. Unfortunately, we were just missing the final touch. A huge positive is that we created chances; we just needed to extend our lead.”

Serge Gnabry: “I think we played well today. We had the opportunity to double our advantage in the first half. It’s a shame that we couldn’t see off the game and bring the points home. I played in an unfamiliar position today, but that didn’t matter. The coach decides where I play. We now want to get three points against Mainz next week. If we can build on today’s performance, we’ll be able to do that.”

Oliver Baumann: “We gave our all to take the three points home today; we wanted to win. We’ll continue working hard to get results. We’re keeping calm and we’re not letting any unrest into the team.”

Nico Schulz: “We deserved the win today, but unfortunately we weren’t clinical enough with the chances we had, so we’ve ended up with a 1-1 draw. Luck is not on our side at the moment. We couldn’t penetrate well enough through their defence, but we the type of football we’re capable of playing. We will win games. We have to pick up points at home next weekend against Mainz. I always think it’s nice to play in my home city. I grew up in Berlin and played here for a long time – it’s the only club which I consider special to play against.”
