Mark Uth: “Apart from the title it’s all to play for”

Mark Uth has had a successful season to date, scoring nine Bundesliga goals as well as setting up two. The striker spoke to us about his switch to Schalke 04 in the summer, his goal tally so far this campaign, Julian Nagelsmann, being thankful and his aims for the rest of the season.

Mark, your transfer to FC Schalke 04 this summer was confirmed over the winter break. How did it all happen?

Mark Uth: “It was a difficult decision for me, and I took a lot of time to think about it with my family. By the end of it all, I thought that going to Schalke was the right step in my career. I think that I’ve been getting better and better over the last three seasons, and I want to build on that.”

TSG has been a big part of your personal development, no?

Uth: “That is for sure. I was really lucky to have had Julian Nagelsmann as my coach. Ever since Julian has been the head coach here, I’ve come on as a footballer dramatically. Therefore, I’m extremely grateful to him and the club as a whole for helping me to become a better player. I don’t say that lightly, but I know that TSG have meant so much to me.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Uth: “I think that we’ll get back to how we know we can play in the next few weeks. We need to build on what we achieved last season when we really dominated teams. We have to get that second goal more frequently, so that we the other team doesn’t have a chance to get back into the game. We have to get that desire we played with before back - and I don’t have any doubts that we will.

And where will TSG be headed by the end of the season?

Uth: “We want to qualify for Europe once again this year. Things are really close in the table this year, so we’re very much still in it. It would be great if we could win a few games on the trot, so that we start making strides up the table. We’re still working hard and we’ll see where we are by the end - apart from the title it’s all to play for.

The game against Schalke 04 on 17th February will be an important one...

Uth: “I’ll give my all for Hoffenheim, even if I’m playing against Schalke - that doesn’t matter.”
