World Cup draw: Zuber vs. Neymar, Kramaric vs. Messi

FIFA carried out the draw for the group stages of the 2018 World Cup on Friday afternoon. Amongst the people who lent a hand with the draw were world champions Diego Maradona, Cafu and Laurent Blanc. The former English striker Gary Lineker presented the draw in Russia. Three tough groups await Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramaric with Croatia, Steven Zuber with Switzerland and Sandro Wagner with Germany.

Zuber’s Switzerland will play their first game in Group E against Brazil and Neymar whilst Sandro Wagner and Germany begin their World Cup defence against Mexico. Andrej Kramaric and Croatia will hope to get off to a good start against Nigeria.

First impressions

Andrej Kramaric said this about his country’s draw: “it is a really hard group. Argentina are one of the best teams in the world and with Messi they have an unbelievably strong team. But that’s the sort of opposition you can expect to face at a World Cup. Then we’ve also got Iceland. They’re a team who we know well from the qualification campaign. They won our group – that says it all really. And Nigeria are an African side who are strong physically and in terms of stamina. They can make it hard for us.”
The group stages won’t be a walk in the park for Steven Zuber either – “It is a tough, good and exciting group. Brazil are a top team but we want to get out of the group and reach the last 16 at least.”
