Wagner makes history with DFB hat-trick

Germany kept up their 100% record in qualifying with an emphatic 7-0 victory over San Marino and remain top of group H with a perfect 18 points and a goal difference of 27:1. And the start of the evening was none other than TSG’s Sandro Wagner. The TSG striker impressed in his second international appearance, scoring a hat-trick.

Wagner, who scored eleven Bundesliga goals in his first season at TSG, made his first appearance for his country during this international break and after celebrating his debut against Denmark last Tuesday, he has now scored his first goals…

Wagner scored the second, third and sixth of the night for Löw’s side to write another chapter in TSG history. He is the first Hoffenheim player to score a goal for Germany. Julian Draxler, Amin Younes, Shkodran Mustafi and Julian Brandt scored netted the other goals for DFB.

“Absolutely elated”

Wagner was clearly made up after scoring a hat-trick. “It felt good. I’ve waited for this moment for a long time. I was absolutely elated and massively relieved. When you start as the striker against San Marino, everyone expects you to score, so there was a bit of pressure on me.”

Wagner showed that he could more than cope with that pressure. “It’s great that I managed to score three goals and do my bit to help the team,” the Hoffenheim striker said. The 29-year-old was keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “I’m able to put that into perspective when you play against an opponent like San Marino.”

No appearances for Rudy, Süle & Demirbay

Germany head coach Joachim Löw was not just satisfied with Wagner for his efforts on the pitch. He is a very mature player and has a personality that speaks his mind and sticks by what he says. He is very positive, open and honest,” said Löw after the match.

Kerem Demirbay, Niklas Süle and Sebastian Rudy, who are also in the Germany squad, were not called upon in the match against San Marino. The four of them will continue their work with the national team when they kick off their Confederations Cup campaign on 19th June against Australia.

In contrast, Pavel Kaderabek played a key role in the Czech Republic’s 1-1 draw in Oslo against Norway, playing the entire 90 minutes of the encounter. The Czechs, who are in third place with nine points after six games in their group, are four points behind second-placed Northern Ireland.
