Mainz 05 match reaction

Quotes and reaction following TSG's 4-0 win at home to Mainz 05 on Saturday.

Julian Nagelsmann: We started the game quite slowly, the early goal obviously helped but we still struggled to create chances. I think my team were still thinking of the reverse fixture when Mainz were very dangerous on the counter attack and we tried to play forward far too quickly in the first half. They had some good set piece chances which Benni Hübner did well to defend against: We played too many long balls at the start of the second period but we were very good, aggressive and quick to go forward in the final twenty minutes. But they’ve come away worse than their performance suggested from the game, the match was not as one sided as the result suggests.

Martin Schmidt (Head coach Mainz 05): We had our moments and our chances, but you’ve also got to back that up in defence and we did not do that well today and the score went in the wrong direction for us. We let them hit us on the break and as a result you end up with the 4-0 scoreline. We deserved to lose at the end of the day because we weren’t strong or aggressive enough. We were too anxious against a strong opponent and the last ten minutes were too much for us.

Marco Terrazzino: It’s not been easy for me of late, but I kept believing in myself and had patience. I got my chance today and made the most of it. I only had 15 minutes to show what I could do but I gave everything. I enjoyed my time out there, and i was in the right place at the right time for the goal. It was a great feeling to play and score. It was an unbelievable day for me.

Adam Szalai: We took the lead early, but it stayed 1-0 for a long time. The more time that passed the more they came into the game. We played our counter attack to perfection and showed our quality at the end of the moves. That was vital to get the win and I just want to enjoy the victory now.

Mark Uth: We tried to counter attack too much in the first half and if we hadn’t we would have taken the lead earlier. We could have let them back in in the second half and only come away with a point. I’m especially delighted for Marco and Adam. Both of them have given so much in training and today they showed what they are made of. I’m obviously pleased with my goal too. It was a fantastic pass from ‘Sippi’. I ran deep, collected the ball and was able to finish it off.
