Revenge is sweet – TSG beat Köln

TSG once again celebrated three points after three consecutive draws. Hoffenheim convincingly beat 1. FC Köln 4-0 as Sandro Wagner bagged his sixth and seventh goals of the season, while Jeremy Toljan and Mark Uth also got on the scoresheet. The win means TSG are now unbeaten in 13 matches

Personnel and tactics

Julian Nagelsmann made three changes to the side that lined up against Borussia Mönchengladbach, with Jeremy Toljan, Nadiem Amiri and Kevin Vogt the new faces in today’s starting XI. Lukas Rupp is out short-term due to a cold and was therefore not in the squad. There were no surprises in the back-three in front of Oliver Baumann as Vogt, fit again after straining his adductor, Niklas Süle and Benjamin Hübner took to the defence. Sebastian Rudy and captain Eugen Polanski occupied the centre of the park while Pavel Kaderabek started on the right, and Toljan set out on the left hand side in place of Steven Zuber. Finally, Sandro Wagner and Andrej Kramaric led the offensive line as Amiri sat just behind them in the centre attacking midfield role.

Nagelsmann brought on fresh legs after the hour mark. Mark Uth came on for Kramaric and 21-year-old Baris Atik replaced Polanski in midfield. Wagner was given a standing ovation as he made way for Philipp Ochs after scoring a brace.

Moment of the match

Nadiem Amiri with his huge, long strides. He finds the space, shakes off a challenge from his opponent. He sees the gap in the Köln defence and plays a perfectly-timed ball in between the lines. Jeremy Toljan makes the run and has read the situation well. He is quicker than the Köln man and hits it first time, poking it through the keeper’s legs. That was Toljan’s first goal of the season and one of many excellent moves by the home side today.

Number of the match: 10

TSG beat Köln for the first time in ten matches in the Bundesliga. Hoffenheim were defeated on five of those occasions, while the other four ended in a stalemate. But this time, Julian Nagelsmann’s side were far better, controlling the game and then celebrating a much-deserved victory in the end. And, they remain unbeaten this season!
