Match reaction against Köln

Here is what both players and managers had to say after TSG’s 4-0 victory at home to 1. FC Köln.

Julian Nagelsmann: From my perspective, the result somewhat flattered us. We had one or two pieces of luck after we scored the first goal, especially when Anthony Modeste missed a brilliant chance to equalise. We were a lot better after that but we had to work hard to defend against Köln. We controlled things after the break and although we didn’t have many clear-cut chances, we got a third and fourth goal. We’re delighted with the win and just like in the cup, it was an interesting game.

Peter Stöger: Congratulations to Julian Nagelsmann and his team. Hoffenheim deserved the victory today. We had several opportunities to get back into the game but we didn’t take them. Hoffenheim in contrast exploited every chance they had. 4-0 is a big score. It is no coincidence that they are up there towards the top of the table and haven’t lost yet. Ultimately, they played with the quality and composure you need.

Mark Uth: We dominated the game and were particularly good in the second half, so we deserved the result today. I had many wonderful years with Köln and know a lot of people who were behind them today. That’s why I didn’t celebrate wildly when I scored and held back a little bit. I will celebrate fully from next week onwards should I score. I was out for six weeks and was back in the team for the first time in two weeks. I’ve noticed in training and in the match today that I still need to improve my fitness.

Sebastian Rudy: We created a lot of good chances, more than the opposition, so we deserved the win. We played very well but I wouldn’t say it was our best performance of the season. We play good football, we gave it everything until the last minute and I think the team have been demonstrating that week in week out.

Kevin Vogt: We wanted to get the three points today and we successfully did that. We were very effective but we did allow Köln one or two opportunities before the break, so they also could have scored. But we’ve been creating more chances recently and also been finishing them. Therefore I think we were worthy winners today. We made up for the result in the cup and we are happy to have got the three points.

Sandro Wagner: We executed our game plan from the first minute to the last and played good football as a team. It’s brilliant when you’re on the pitch and things go the way they did today. It was a great day, but it’s just one game. We wanted to move the ball quickly and that worked time and again. Where this journey will take us to, I don’t know. I am also not the kind of guy who looks very far ahead. I’m just enjoying the moment. The fact that we are still unbeaten after 13 league games is incredible. Now I’m looking forward to the match in Frankfurt. They are also having a very strong season and have a superb coach in Niko Kovac, who I very much liked as a player.
