Victory: TSG beat Schalke at home

After going behind 1-0, TSG turned the match around to beat Schalke 04 2-1 and get their first win of the season. Schalke opened the scoring through Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, but Hoffenheim hit back with goals from Andrej Kramaric and Lukas Rupp.

Personnel and tactics

TSG made three changes to the team that started in Darmstadt. Niklas Süle was back in the side after being out with a bruised pelvic bone, while Jeremy Toljan and Lukas Rupp also returned to the starting XI. There were no surprises in goal as Oliver Baumann started. The back-line in front of Baumann consisted of Süle, Ermin Bicakcic and Kevin Vogt, while the midfield was made up of Toljan, Pavel Kaderabek, Sebastian Rudy, Rupp and Kerem Demirbay. The TSG attack was headed by Mark Uth and Andrej Kramaric. Kaderabek and Toljan were able to add to the attack by pushing forwards whilst Bicakcic, Süle and Vogt filled in at the back.

Hoffenheim were forced to make a change in the first half. Bicakcic was unable to continue after 39 minutes due to an injury and was replaced by Fabian Schär. Uth’s game also came to an end prematurely due to a thigh injury, being replaced by Nadiem Amiri. Nagelsmann made his final change of the match in the 73rd match, bringing on Eduardo Vargas for goalscorer Rupp.

Moment of the match

The build-up play. The tempo. The desire. Charging for goal. Kerem Demirbay’s contribution to the first goal for TSG was absolutely fantastic. Demirbay comes down the right-hand side, charges past the Schalke number 16, looks up and then plays the perfect pass - low, accurate, to the number 5. It was the perfect assist.

Number of the match: 1

Finally, the first win of the season. A home win. And TSG finally get a win on a Sunday, ending the week with three points for the first time since December 2014.
