TSG beaten by KV Oostende

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim suffered defeat in their pre-season friendly on Saturday. Belgian top-tier outfit KV Oostende beat Julian Nagelsmann’s side 2-1. Mark Uth scored for TSG.

The following players started: Oliver Baumann, Ermin Bicakcic, Sebastian Rudy, Eugen Polanski, Kerem Demirbay, Jeremy Toljan, Steven Zuber, Mark Uth, Niklas Süle, Andrej Kramarić and Sandro Wagner.

Oostende’s domestic season begins next weekend and they raced out of the traps. Adam Marusic fired them in front after just seven minutes. His long-range effort flew past Oliver Baumann and hit the back of the net via the inside of the far post.

Uth strikes back

TSG took a while to find their stride after falling behind but increased the pressure on their opponents around the half-hour mark. Mark Uth, Niklas Süle, Jeremy Toljan and Andrej Kramaric were all denied in quick succession before Uth finally grabbed the equaliser. Kramaric delivered a sumptuous cross from the left and his strike partner headed home with aplomb.

The final chance of the half fell to Sandro Wagner after classy work from Rudy. The forward did well to turn and create a shooting opportunity for himself, however, his powerful drive was cleared off the line by a defender, with goalkeeper Proto well beaten.

Changes at the break

Julian Nagelsmann made 11 changes at the break: Alexander Stolz, Pavel Kaderabek, Fabian Schär, Lukas Rupp, Jonathan Schmid, Pirmin Schwegler, Jin-Su Kim, Benjamin Hübner, Kevin Vogt, Marco Terrazzino and Adam Szalai all played after the break.

Chances were few and far between after the break, but Oostende were a constantly threat on the break. They retook the lead after 59 minutes. Yassine El Ghanassy burst forward and delivered a powerful effort from outside the box which drifted into the back of the net and ended up proving to be the winning goal.

Julian Nagelsmann had the following to say after the match: “I’m not happy with how we played today. We lost the ball too easily in their half before the break and we didn’t react well to their counters. This was a problem that we saw against Stuttgart last season and we need to improve a bit. We were better after the break but didn’t manage to get back into the game.”
