Vargas grabs a brace as Chile make quarterfinals

Eduardo Vargas had a brilliant evening in his final group match with Chile, as they secured a 4-2 victory over Panama. Vargas and Alexis Sanchez both grabbed a brace to see Chile through to the quarterfinals of the Copa America.

Vargas & Co. had to fight back from behind before they could celebrate, as Miguel Camargo put Panama ahead with an effort from distance with five minutes on the clock. Chile didn’t need much longer to find their feet in the game though. Panama’s goalkeeper could only parry a shot from Sanchez straight out to Vargas who stabbed the ball home. Chile controlled the first half and were rewarded for their effort shortly before the break.

Vargas scored his second goal of the game with his head in the 43rd minute to give Chile a 2-1 lead and played a part in his country’s third as well, as the Hoffenheim man gave the assist for Sanchez’s spectacular volley in the 50th minute. Panama managed to pull the game back to 3-2 but Sanchez made sure the game was put to bed, scoring in the 89th minute to give Chile a 4-2 win.

The Man of the Match was clearly going to be Vargas after his two goals, assist and 100 percent pass rate. Chile will take on Mexico in the quarterfinals of the Copa America on Saturday.
