Vargas and Chile in the Copa America final

The Chile national team have made a big step on their way to defending the Copa America title. In the semi final, Eduardo Vargas und Co. fought through to beat Columbia 2-0. Now Argentina await them in the final.

Vargas was once again in Chile national coach Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team, and the Hoffenheimer was part of the attack for 88 minutes. Vargas did not quite manage to bag himself a goal against Columbia, but the 26-year-old celebrated both goals with his teammates nonetheless.

Chile were on their way to the final very early on in the match. It took only seven minutes for Leverkusener Charles Aranguiz to put his side into the lead, and just four minutes later the score was 2-0 - Fuenzalida scoring for "La Roja". However, Chile did not feel comfortable with their two-goal advantage. The Columbians fought hard, and the title holders had their keeper Claudio Bravo to thank, that they were still ahead at the start of the second half.

The second period got under way more than two hours later. Due to a storm and heavy rainfall, the match had to be interrupted for a very long time. The second 45 minutes played right into the hands of the Chileans, because they were playing with one man more from the 57th minute, after Columbia’s Carlos Sanchez was shown his second yellow card. There were no more goals, but Chile celebrated their first victory over Columbia for more than five years, and their march to the final.

The final will take place on the night of the 26th into the 27th June, and Chile will face Argentina, who comfortably beat USA 4-0 in their semi final.
