EURO 2016: Switzerland come from behind to draw with Romania

Switzerland were unable to make it two wins from two games but after the 1-1 draw with Romania, they have four points to their name and one foot in the European Championship round of 16. Leverkusen‘s Admir Mehmedi scored the deserved equaliser after the break.

Switzerland, for whom Schär started, made an attacking start. Haris Seferovic had two good chances in the opening stages. Romania played a waiting game in allowing Switzerland to control the game but scored the opening goal. The referee pointed to the penalty spot after Lichtensteiner pulled his opponent’s shirt. Stancu converted, leaving Swiss shot-stopper Yann Sommer no chance – 1-0 to Romania after 18 minutes.

After the goal, most of the play was once again directed towards the Romania’s goal. Schär, wanting to net his second of the tournament, shot from distance – a powerful strike but Romania’s keeper saved. The Swiss remained in control of the game and fought well after the break in a bid to take all three points. After 57 minutes, Mehmedi scored a deserved equaliser. Switzerland, for whom Schär once again played the full 90 minutes, carved out but couldn’t make the most of several further opportunities to win the game. Nevertheless, with four points in the bag, the team still has the best chance of making the knockout stages.

Switzerland face hosts France in their final group game on Sunday evening (21:00 CEST) in Lille.
