TSG fight back to beat Ingolstadt

Hoffenheim remain unbeaten at home under Julian Nagelsmann, having picked up vital points in the fight for survival. Despite going behind to FC Ingolstadt, TSG recorded a 2-1 win on matchday 32 courtesy of goals from Mark Uth and Nadiem Amiri.

Tactics and line-up:

There were two changes to the starting line-up compared to the loss in Mönchengladbach. Ermin Bicakcic replaced the injured Fabian Schär in defence, while Philipp Ochs came into midfield with Nadiem Amiri dropping to the bench. That meant the back four in front of Oliver Baumann was made up of Sebastian Rudy, Niklas Süle, Ermin Bicakcic and Jeremy Toljan from right to left. Eugen Polanski and Tobias Strobl were paired in holding midfield, with Ochs just ahead of them in the centre. Mark Uth and Kevin Volland occupied the wings, with Andrej Kramaric up front to complete the 4-3-3 formation.

Nagelsmann began his tinkering after an hour, introducing Nadiem Amiri and Pavel Kaderabek in like-for-like changes; Amiri replaced Ochs in midfield, while Kaderabek took up Rudy’s spot at right back. Pirmin Schwegler also took over from Polanski with 15 minutes to play.

Moment of the match:

The starting line-up were wearing special jackets when they came out onto the pitch at the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena, with the number 17 printed on the back of each of them – a special gesture for their injured teammate Steven Zuber, who suffered a fractured skull during training this week. An even nicer moment, however, was Nadiem Amiri taking off his shirt while celebrating his winner and holding up a shirt with the number 17 on it.

Number of the match: 2

The second half was all TSG, but the second goal just didn’t seem to want to come, despite two huge chances. First it was a penalty that saw Kramaric denied, and then it was Uth who was denied one-on-one by FCI keeper Nyland. It didn’t matter in the end though, as Nadiem Amiri came to TSG’s rescue to get goal number two and claim the victory.
