TSG win their second home game in a row against Augsburg

Hoffenheim won their second home game in a row 2-1 against FC Augsburg. In a tense, thrilling and turbulent game TSG managed to keep their composure, as goals from Kevin Volland and Mark Uth secured the victory.

Line-up and tactics:

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann made four changes going into the floodlit game against Augsburg, replacing both of his sitting midfielders out of necessity. Sebastian Rudy was serving a suspension after collecting a red card in the last game against Dortmund and Tobias Strobl is suffering from a knee injury. Pirmin Schweiger and Eugen Polanski came in to the side in front of the back four as their replacements. Eduardo Vargas and Philipp Ochs, who were unused substitutes last week against Dortmund also started the game.

Oliver Baumann was in goal as usual, with Fabian Schär and Niklas Süle the centre-backs. The back four was completed by Ochs on the left and Pavel Kaderabek on the right side. In attack Nadiem Amiri and Vargas lead the line, with Mark Uth and Kevin Volland for support.

With respect to the tactics, when attacking TSG moved into a 3-4-3. However, when defending Polanski dropped back into the back four so that Baumann had a solid back five in front of him. As well as that, the two wingers Volland and Uth also helped out.

After half time, Ermin Bacakcic came on for Schweiger, making Polanski the sole sitting midfielder. After 70 minutes, Andrej Kramaric was brought on for Vargas, as pair of fresh legs in attack.

Moment of the match:

A penalty, but why? The referee Guido Winkmann probably knows. No challenge, no fall. A shot ends up in the second row and then the referee blows. Turns out it was for a handball by Niklas Süle, but he is baffled, as he has no idea how he has handled it, because both of his hands were within the bounds of his body. The Augsburg players probably weren’t sure why the penalty was given either. Nevertheless it gets slotted into the back of the net for the equaliser.

Number of the match: 2

Two goals and a second home win in a row, the second under Julian Nagelsmann.
