Three-match ban for Sebastian Rudy

The DFB sports tribunal have issued TSG player Sebastian Rudy with a three-match ban following his red card against Borussia Dortmund for foul play. TSG have now accepted the ban after an initial appeal.

In the 58th minute during Sunday’s game, the TSG midfielder brought down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and was sent off by referee Peter Sippel with a straight red card.

"It’s quite a severe punishment for that foul. Unfortunately we have no choice and must accept the decision. The problem here is not the severe, yet rule-consistent decision of the referee, or his interpretation of the foul, but the rule itself, which doesn’t allow for any discretion," said Alexander Rosen, sporting director of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Sebastian Rudy and TSG had initially objected to the DFB’s decision of a three-match ban. However, the DFB disciplinary board’s sole adjudicator for the case stood by his decision. The punishment for “dangerous play” is clearly defined by the DFB: A ‘foul tackle from behind’ results in at least a three-match ban.

Rudy will miss the games against Augsburg, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.
