Volland brace - TSG win in Augsburg!

Crucial victory! TSG Hoffenheim beat FC Augsburg 3-1 away from home and turned their form around. Kevin Volland netted two of the goals, while Jonathan Schmid bagged the third.

Tactics and line-up

After a strong performance at home to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, manager Markus Gisdol saw no reason to make any changes to the team, and so the exact same starting XI from the game against BVB began on the pitch today.

In front of Oliver Baumann between the sticks, the centre back duo of Niklas Süle and Ermin Bicakcic lined up between fullbacks Pavel Kaderábek and Jeremy Toljan to form the TSG back four. Eugen Polanski and captain Pirmin Schwegler once again started as the two defensive midfielders, with the wings being occupied by Jonathan Schmid on the left, and Sebastian Rudy on the right. Kevin Volland and Eduardo Vargas were on goal scoring duty up front following their impressive display in Dortmund.

Tobias Strobl then replaced Rudy to mark the start of the second half. Later in the match, Fabian Schär came on for Vargas and Schmid made way for Zuber.

Moment of the match:

The goal to make it 2-1 in the 69th minute. Right in the middle of an Augsburg onslaught, Vargas wins the penalty and changes the whole nature of the game. FCA hardly threatened after that and TSG soon after made it 3-1. Defining moment!

Number of the match: 3

The first three points of the season for TSG!  After a hard-earned point against Dortmund, Markus Gisdol’s side turned their season around and created some breathing space at the bottom of the table. This is more like it!
