HOFFENHEIM SUFFER AWAY DEFEAT IN MAINZ

In the opening fixture of Bundesliga matchday 5, TSG Hoffenheim lost 3-1 against FSV Mainz 05. Jonathan Schmid put Hoffenheim in front early on with his first competitive goal for the club, but Yunus Malli struck back for Mainz with a hattrick.

LINE-UP AND FORMATION:

Markus Gisdol sent his team onto the pitch with three changes from the Werder Bremen game, along with a new formation. Kevin Kurányi, Mark Uth and Steven Zuber were replaced by Eduardo Vargas, Jonathan Schmid and Sebastian Rudy in the starting eleven. The 4-4-2 diamond formation was switched to a 4-3-3 line-up.

There were no changes in goal or in the back four – Pavel Kaderabek, Niklas Süle, Fabain Schär and Jin-Su Kim played in front of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Gisdol employed three defensive midfielders in the form of Rudy, Eugen Polanski and captain Pirmin Schwegler. In attack, Jonathan Schmid and Kevin Volland were on the wings, providing service for centre forward Eduardo Vargas.

At 3-1 down, Markus Gisdol risked everything and threw on Kevin Kurányi and Mark Uth for Pirmin Schwegler and Ju-Su Kim, and in doing so, the 4-3-3 changed to a more attacking 3-4-3. At half time, Gisdol brought on Ermin Bicakcic for the already-booked Schär.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

We don't like to say it, but Malli's seond goal of the night was a sight to behold.

NUMBER OF THE MATCH: 34,75 & 51,98

We went into the break at 1-1, despite having only 35% possession in the first half. In the second half the figure increased to 52%, but the result shows that statistics don't always matter. After 90 minutes, it was 3-1 to Mainz.
