Markus Gisdol - "Our aim? Three points. Plain and simple"

After a week off, the Bundesliga is finally back on Sunday. Markus Gisdol looks ahead to the clash with Werder Bremen and his aim for the match couldn’t be clearer: to get our first win of the season.

Markus Gisdol on ...

... the opposition

Werder found their stability under Viktor Skripnik in the second half of last season. They normally set up in a diamond formation and are quite an attacking side. But that doesn’t really matter. Our aim on Sunday is to get three points, plain and simple – regardless of the opposition.

... the personnel

Today will be the first time since the break that we will train as a whole team. On Thursday, the last of the players to return from international duty: Fabian Schär, Jin-Su Kim, Niklas Süle and Jeremy Toljan were still training individually. It’s a tricky situation - on the one hand you can nurse your wounds and undergo some intensive training in isolation, but on the other you never have the whole squad together. The important thing is that we’ve all returned fit, and that all our players are available for Sunday.

... the current situation I

I’m not happy with one point from three games, but we have to look at the situation realistically. Leverkusen and Bayern München are not the kind of teams we can definitely expect to win or take points from. So a point away at Darmstadt is absolutely fine.

… the current situation II

…The ball needs to cross the line. If Polanski puts his penalty an inch further to left, it’s a goal; if the Darmstadt player doesn’t get his studs in the way of Kurányi’s shot just inches in front of the line, it’s also a goal. We came very close, but we need to make our performances count. On Sunday, we want to hit them with everything we have in terms of determination and passion.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS:

TSG’s record against Werder is not good by any means, but Markus Gisdol and his team will not be fazed by this. In 15 competitive encounters, TSG have only been able to beat Bremen once. This victory was now over five years ago – in August 2010 Hoffenheim won 4-1 at home. Aside from that there have been five draws and nine defeats for TSG.

WERDER’S FORM:

One win, one draw, one defeat – Bremen have made a solid start to the new season. Their last game was a 2-1 win at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Whether the returning Claudio Pizarro will play remains to be seen. But the arrival of the club legend can only be a motivating factor for the Werder players and fans.

ONE TO WATCH:

One man. One name. Junuzovic. Zlatko Junuzovic. The Austria international is the master of set pieces. Last season, Werder scored a total of 26 goals from set pieces – the league’s best. Even this season, two of Werder’s three goals have come from dead-ball situations. TSG need to be on full alert.
