Draw in final friendly against Bournemouth

The season opener at the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena produced a 0-0 draw between TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Premier League side AFC Bournemouth. Manager Markus Gisdol used the final friendly match of the pre-season preparation for further experimenting, by using a total of 22 players in the encounter.

Tactics and line-up:

In the absence of injured captain Pirmin Schwegler, manager Gisdol started with the following line-up against the newly promoted Premier League side: Oliver Baumann stood between the sticks and was protected by a four-man backline consisting of Pavel Kaderabek, Fabian Schär, Niklas Süle and Jin-Su Kim. Sebastian Rudy and Eugen Polanski occupied the centre, while Steven Zuber, Kevin Volland and Jonathan Schmid supported striker Mark Uth. Four new-signings made the starting XI in Hoffenheim's final friendly before the first round DFB Cup encounter with 1860 München next week.

Match highlights:

3rd minute: Oliver Baumann is called into action for the first time by Matt Richie's shot from ten yards. A rebounded attempt hits the side-netting.

13th minute: Mark Uth is forced off with a knee injury after a collision in the opponent’s penalty box. The new signing is replaced by Philipp Ochs. Volland pushes forward to lead the attack, while Ochs positions himself just behind the striker.

26th minute: What a clearance by Fabian Schär. Dan Gosling finds himself some space in TSG's penalty area and shots from nine yards. Oliver Baumann is beaten, but Schär jumps through the air and blocks the ball magnificently. Everyone take a deep breath!

47th minute: Substitute Tarik Elyounoussi fires just wide from a promising position, as TSG record the first chance of the second half.

58th minute: Philipp Ochs enters Bournemouth's penalty area from the left, but the angle is not favourable and his attempt hits the side-netting.

65th minute: Matt Ritchie hits a powerful shot from 22 yards that's heading towards the target but fortunately misses wide. It's unlikely Baumann would've been able to get a hand on that.

Moment of the match:

This actually occurred before the game kicked off, when it was announced on the video screen that centreback Niklas #Süle2019 had extended his contract!
