U21 EUROs: Volland captains Germany to a draw, Kaderabek beaten

Germany and their captain Kevin Volland had to settle for a draw in their opening Group A game at the European U21 Championship in the Czech Republic, being held 1-1 by Serbia. Future Hoffenheim player and Czech defender Pavel Kaderabek’s also didn’t get the result he wanted against Denmark.

The Germany U21s, coached by Horst Hrubesch, fell behind after just eight minutes in Prague’s Letna Stadium, with recent Southampton loanee Filip Djuricic grabbing Serbia’s goal.

Emre Can levelled the scores shortly before the 20-minute mark though. The Liverpool all-rounder beat his man on the edge of the box and fired low into the bottom corner. Kevin Volland assisted the goal with a precise pass from the byline. The game was mostly played in midfield after that.

The DFB-Team can be satisfied with the point though, with Hrubesch’s side playing the final 20 minutes with just ten man following Christian Günter’s dismissal for a second bookable offence. The best chance for either side to win the game fell to Volland in the 86th minute, but his strike from around 16 years was blocked at the last second.

Kaderabek’s goal not enough

TSG’s latest signing Pavel Kaderabek also began his European Championship campaign with the Czech Republic U21s last night. However, despite the full back opening the scoring for the hosts after 35 minutes in Prague, Denmark went on to win 2-1, with former TSG defender Jannik Vestergaard getting on the scoresheet.
