TSG beaten 3-1 in Schalke

TSG were unable to take the momentum from Tuesday night's win in the DFB Cup into today's game in Schalke as they went down 3-1 to the Champions League side. Kevin Volland pulled one back for Hoffenheim with just over a quarter of an hour to go but it was too little too late after Christian Fuchs' strike and a brace from Max Meyer had given the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead.

Tactics and line-up:

Manager Markus Gisdol made a handful of changes to the side that started in Tuesday's win in the last 16 of the DFB Cup. First choice goalkeeper Oliver Baumann returned between the sticks in place of Jens Grahl, who dropped back to the bench. The manager reverted back to the usual 4-2-3-1 formation instead of the 4-3-3 that was deployed in midweek. The only change among the back four saw Jeremy Toljan make way at left back for Jin-Su Kim.

Germany international Sebastian Rudy started on the bench in Schalke, with Stephen Zuber coming into the side in his place. Eugen Polanski and Pirmin Schwegler started in holding midfield, with Zuber starting on the left hand side, alongside Kevin Volland and Roberto Firmino, who started on the right and behind the striker respectively. The final change to the side was up top, with Anthony Modeste preferred to Sven Schipplock.

Match highlights:

2nd minute:Early chance for the hosts! Barnetta crosses from the right for Fuchs but his shot is fired narrowly wide of Oliver Baumann's post!

3rd minute:It's end to end early on at the Veltins-Arena. TSG break and the ball falls to Anthony Modeste at the back post with the goal gaping, but he doesn't get good contact on his shot and it's cleared off the line.

7th minute:TSG trying to hit Schalke on the break. Steven Zuber breaks before letting fly from outside the area, but his shot is palmed away by Wellenreuther.

10th minute: A great last ditch tackle from Ermin Bicakcic denies the hosts an easy tap in!

12th minute: GOAL for Schalke and it's been coming. Barnetta crosses once again for Fuchs, who makes no mistake this time and buries the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

24th minute:Andreas Beck provides the overlap down the right and drills the ball in low looking for Modeste. However, his touch at the near post is deflected behind for a corner by Höwedes.

33rd minute:The hosts have a few good chances to double their lead. Baumann first parries a deflected Meyer shot aside before a shot from outside the box whistles wide of the post.

41st minute:Goal number two for Schalke. Choupo-Moting cuts the ball back from the byline for Max Meyer, who taps home from close range to double the lead.

51st minute:Volland fashions a chance from distance but his rasping effort is tipped behind by Wellenreuther…no corner given.

53rd minute: GOAL for Schalke. Choupo-Moting gets beyond Strobl and finds an unmarked Max Meyer in the middle once again to tap home his second and Schalke's third.

73rd minute: GOOOOAAAALLL for TSG!!! A quality counter attack is coolly finished off by Kevin Volland. A lifeline or a consolation?

83rd minute: What a chance! A TSG corner his flicked on to the back post where Bicakcic is waiting to tap home, but he somehow puts the ball wide from only a few yards out!

Moment of the match:

Anthony Modeste had a great chance to put TSG in front after two minutes. Christian Fuchs had to cover for his keeper and clear off the line, but who knows how the game would have panned out if we'd taken an early lead.

Number of the match:18

Hoffenheim had 18 shots in Gelsenkirchen, which is four times as many as the hosts. TSG also had a higher number of shots on target than their opponents- 7 compared to their 5. Unfortunately, the Royal Blues were able to find the back of the net on more occasions.
