Freiburg match reaction

We caught up with Markus Gisdol, Christian Streich and few players after the 1-1 draw with Freiburg.

Markus Gisdol: Freiburg were slightly better in the first half and we deserved to go behind. Then we got back in to the game thanks to an excellent goal by Kevin Volland. The second half was good and we definitely had the chance to make it 2-1 – we could have got all three points. But it's always difficult to play here so we are happy to come away with a point.

Christian Streich: We weren't able to attack as successfully as we wanted to in the opening stages because Hoffenheim played lots of long balls to Modeste, and Firmino and Volland were troubling the defence. That's very tricky to deal with. We would have liked to have won but we aren't disappointed with a point. The team gave everything and remained composed. When the team play like they did today, it's a good sign for the next game. Hoffenheim were too strong for us to come away with the victory.

Oliver Baumann: I acted the same way I always do. I didn't change my attitude towards the crowd. It's normal that there were whistles and jeers from them. It's a derby. The fans didn't expect me to sign for a local rival. We lacked a bit of luck in the end. We had some good efforts on goal in the second half – even from the defenders. We didn't start the game well but fought our way back in to it. We can and have to live with a point.

Eugen Polanski: In the first few games of 2015, we haven't always taken control of the game as much as we wanted. We aimed to change that today. However, we unfortunately didn't succeed in doing that in the first half. It was okay though, especially since we recovered so quickly from going 1-0 down. We did well in the second half following a few tactical instructions from the manager. We had the better chances and didn't let Freiburg create much. We deserved the three points because we invested a lot in the second half.

Kevin Volland: We struggled in the first 45. Luckily I struck the ball well and scored so we got back in the game. We were the better team after that and didn't let ourselves get pushed back. Our pressing was much better. It's a point that we can live with, even though we could have got all three. It was an extremely competitive game and maybe we lacked a bit of composure in front of goal. We want to win our next game at home against Mainz.
