Steven Zuber: “Only Saturday counts”

Steven Zuber joined Hoffenheim from CSKA Moscow in August 2014 – he put in his best performance for his new employers last time out against VfL Wolfsburg. achtzehn99.de spoke to the Swiss midfielder about his time in Kraichgau, dealing with defeats and the upcoming derby against VfB Stuttgart.

Hello, Steven. You were brought on at the break against Wolfsburg. What did you make of your performance?

Steven Zuber: I felt good on the pitch. It was probably my best performance for TSG. I think that you can see that I've developed in the past weeks and months. It's a shame that I wasn't able to help the team bring something home from Wolfsburg. One thing is for certain; there is still room for improvement. I want to continue putting in the best performances I can in training and also in matches.

Saturday will mark the six-month anniversary of your transfer. How has it been for you so far?

Zuber: I've settled in well. I haven't had any personal or sporting issues. These six months have been positive for me. I've improved and feel at home at the club. I hope that it continues this way.

You came here from Moscow, which is quite a change. Have you managed to adapt to the peace and tranquillity?

Zuber: It wasn't an issue for me. I like peace but at the same time I do like it when things are happening. In Heidelberg and the surrounding region I get a bit of both. There are a lot of cafés and restaurants in Neuenheim but I also enjoy the old town in Heidelberg. I like it there.

TSG's recent results haven't been as good as expected. What do you make of the current situation?

Zuber: We didn't have a lot of time to think about the defeats last week because we had to prepare for the next game straightaway. We watched the match against Wolfsburg back as a team in order to draw attention to our mistakes. However, we also need to move on from the past. We showed a lot of guts in the second half against VfL – we need to carry on playing like that. The game on Saturday is the only thing that matters for now.

You face VfB Stuttgart in the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena. How do you see the derby panning out?

Zuber: We've had a little look at how Stuttgart play, but we will take another look ahead of the game. It's going to be an exciting match and our aim is to pick up the three points. We want to impose ourselves upon them, dominate proceedings and win the game in front of our own supporters.

The match takes place on Valentine's Day – is the day a big deal in Switzerland?

Zuber: Obviously, but I've not had much luck previously (laughs). My focus is entirely on the game.
