Mainz 05 match reaction

Here is the match reaction after the 2-2 draw against Mainz:

Markus Gisdol: It's tough to take today. We played well for a number of passages, but for the final 15 minutes we were sloppy in defence. We've left the game as if we've come away empty handed. A point in a game you have to win is not enough. We will talk about the mistakes. It cannot continue like this for the rest of the season.

Alexander Rosen: It was clear from the start that Mainz wanted to start something special. We battled well against it and scored both our goals during that time. We played really well up until the 75th minute. We hardly let anything through. Then we got sloppy, as a unit, and weren't consistent in attack anymore. With each defensive play we got more and more nervous. How the final score came to be 2-2 is something I can't explain.

Sebastian Rudy: I don't know what happened. We weren't well positioned. We are all really disappointed. It was silent in the changing room. That just can't happen.

Sven Schipplock: We started well. Towards the end of the game, we dropped deeper and deeper. We didn't manage to keep them at bay in the end. With every play, Mainz pushed harder and made us unsure.

Thomas Tuchel: We started well. We were brave, open and had the momentum. Then we didn't get the call with the penalty, controversially, and conceded two goals in quick succession. We weren't set up well and lost too many challenges. The desire was there though. We knew we could come back and we managed that too. Even if we missed the chance to do more today, it did us good to come away with a point.
