Dramatic win for the USA – Salihovic breezes to victory – Draw for Polanski

Fabian Johnson, Daniel Williams, Sejad Salihovic and Eugen Polanski were all in action for their respective nations on Friday night in qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The USA won in Jamaica thanks to an injury-time goal, Salihovic's Bosnia and Herzegovina team were dominant in Latvia, while Polanksi could only manage a draw with Poland against Moldova – a setback for his nation's World Cup hopes.

There was intense drama for the USA against Jamaica in Kingston. After Jürgen Klinsmann's men, who had Fabian Johnson on the pitch for 76 minutes, conceded an equaliser one minute before the end of regulation play, Brad Evans provided an injury-time strike for a 2-1 win. Daniel Williams, who has had little game time recently due to an ankle injury, was not in the squad for the match. The Americans are now in second place in the CONCACAF World Cup qualification. Costa Rica currently lead the way with a superior goal difference.

“Jamaica are a very physical side. We had the game under control in the first half and deservedly went 1-0 up,” said Fabian Johnson on Saturday morning, adding: “Jamaica put us under a lot of pressure in the second half. Fortunately for us, their defence wasn't at its best when we scored our late winner.” The USA have two further qualifying matches in the coming weeks: First up is Panama on June 11th in Seattle, Washington, followed by a game against Honduras on June 18th in Sandy, Utah.

Poles only manage 1-1 draw with Moldova

“We had chances in the first half to go 3-0 or 4-0 up but we didn't take them,” said Polanski to achtzehn99.de on Friday night. “We made things difficult for ourselves in the second half and lacked the necessary intelligence to make the breakthrough.” Polanski played until the 81st minute in defensive midfield for Poland. The 27-year-old will now start his well-earned summer holidays.

Poland are currently sitting fourth in World Cup qualifying Group H, five points behind leaders Montenegro, although Polanski's side have played one game less. England currently occupy second place in the group which could still offer a route to Brazil 2014 via a play off. Poland are just three points behind Roy Hodgson's men but have played the same number of games.

Salihovic heading for the World Cup

Things went much better for TSG player Sejad Salihovic on Friday evening in Bosnia and Herzegovina's match against Latvia. He played 79 minutes in a more than comfortable 5-0 win for his country. Bosnia and Herzegovina now have 16 points from six games in Group G with a three-point lead over second-placed Greece and look well placed to be at Brazil next summer. Next up for Salihovic is a friendly match against Oman in Muscat on June 10th.
