Heurelho Gomes: “It's important for the players' enthusiasm to rub off on the fans”

Heurelho Gomes has settled in at Hoffenheim after just a short space of time. The Brazilian goalkeeper spoke to achtzehn99.de about the status of the Bundesliga, his playing style, his relationship with Tim Wiese and the possibility of a longer stay in the Kraichgau.

Heurelho Gomes on the Bundesliga…

I knew about the Bundesliga before my move here because my friend Josué plays for Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga is one of the strongest leagues in the world and I'm delighted that I can get some experience here.

Heurelho on his goal celebrations against Freiburg…

The win over Freiburg was very important for us. That's why I was so happy and celebrated with the fans. It's important for the players' enthusiasm to rub off on them. The fans are always important for the club, especially in our situation. We all know that there is still a long way to go in terms of avoiding relegation. We have to work with full concentration and can't afford to relax.

Heurelho on his goalkeeping style…

I always try to get involved in the game, give off a sense of confidence, have a presence in the area and give the defence a hand. They need to have faith in what I do. That's something I hope they and the whole team will have.

Heurelho on his relationship with Tim Wiese…

We have a completely normal relationship. There isn't much talking on the training pitch as we're focussed on our work, but that is normal. We have had some good conversations and we both have similar motivations.

Heurelho on the battle for places…

I don't like to talk about the battle for places. The manager decides who plays. My job is to work hard, put myself forward and help the team get back on the road to success.

Heurelho's thoughts on the fight against relegation…

I'm confident that we can do it. We've only made the first step. We have to keep at it. We need wins and points. Things went well against Freiburg but there is always something that you can do better – we want to take another step forward against Hannover by taking something from the game. It will be an exciting season right up until the end, but if we work hard as a team like we have been doing recently then we can stay up.

Heurelho on the possibility of a longer stay in Hoffenheim…

I have a contract with Tottenham until 2014. As things stand, I'll be going back there in the summer. That's not something I'm thinking about at the moment though. Right now it's about the next 14 games and staying in the Bundesliga. I want to help here – everything else is irrelevant at the moment.
