Duel in Baden: Three points are long overdue

On Saturday February 2nd at 15.30 CET, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim face their local rivals SC Freiburg in their second home game of the second half of the season. Freiburg have definitely been one of the surprises of the campaign and are currently in eighth spot, only one point behind a European place. However, Christian Streich's team are still waiting for their first win of the second half of the season after two goalless draws.

Freiburg are however winning the head-to-head with Hoffenheim, who have only managed one win and three draws in a total of seven Bundesliga encounters so far.

Despite this, Marco Kurz declared himself ready for the fight ahead of the game in the press conference on Thursday. New arrival Igor de Camargo was also officially introduced. “Aside from the sporting quality, it was important for me to know the attitude of the players and know that they were ready to get to grips with the situation.” In order to get closer to this goal “three points on Saturday are extremely important,” said Kurz.

Polanski expects a “tenacious game”

Eugen Polanski played for Mainz against Freiburg on matchday 18 in the Bundesliga. The midfielder is expecting a “tenacious game because that's what it was when I played for Mainz.” Nevertheless, he believes “the chance for a win is there.”

Looking at Freiburg, Kurz has heaped praise on the style of their play: “Freiburg are a strong side. Christian Streich knows all the intricate aspects of the game and has worked well with his team. They are dangerous and have shown for over a year how consistent their performances are.”

Alongside the two long-term injuries to Sebastian Rudy and Sejad Salihovic, Kurz will also be without Joselu (muscle injury), Sven Schipplock (Achilles tendon injury), Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Thesker. Although Jens Grahl and Chris have returned from illness they are still not available for selection. Fabian Johnson is fit though. Kurz also revealed in the press conference that new arrival Igor de Camargo will be in the squad for Saturday.
