Tim Wiese to take captain's armband

Tim Wiese has been announced as the new TSG 1899 Hoffenheim captain. The German goalkeeper, who has been capped six times by his country, was made the leader of the Bundesliga side by manager Markus Babbel on Thursday. The 30 year old replaces Andreas Beck, who gave up the role at the end of last season. Wiese will wear the armband for the first time in Saturday's upcoming game against fourth division side SV 07 Elversberg at 14.00 CET.

Coach Markus Babbel on his decision: “I always said that I would make a seasoned player captain. A true professional, who has the charisma and the experience to take on the role. It was important that whoever I picked had to be a regular starter and someone the players could approach off the field. Tim Wiese ticks all these boxes.”

Tim Wiese himself is very relaxed about taking up this new task: “The additional responsibility is not a problem for me, I've said that once before. I'm honoured that the manager has put so much trust in me, and will do all that I can in my role as captain to help bring this team success. I would have done the same even without the armband.”

Markus Babbel has also announced other experienced TSG players in what he calls his team council. Along with Tim Wiese, this includes Marvin Compper, Sejad Salihovic, Fabian Johnson and Sebastian Rudy.
