International round-up

No less than ten players from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim were on international duty this week. Among the standout results were a 1-0 win for USA against Italy in Genoa and Germany's U21 team advancing to the brink of qualification for the European Championships in 2013 by beating Greece 1-0. Elsewhere, Knowledge Musona was on the scoresheet for Zimbabwe in their 2-1 defeat to Burundi.

Italy 0-1 USA

Fabian Johnson and Daniel Williams helped Jürgen Klinsmann's USA team pull off a stunning 1-0 win over Italy last night. Fulham FC's Clint Dempsey was the goalscoring hero for the Americans, but Williams turned in a solid performance and lasted the entire 90 minutes. Johnson started the game and was substituted after 77 minutes.

Germany U21s 1-0 Greece U21s

It wasn't quite a repeat of the 5-4 thriller we witnessed the last time these two teams played, when Hoffenheim's Peniel Mlapa netted a hat-trick, but last night's 1-0 win for Germany's U21 team against Greece was enough to effectively take them to the European Championships next year. Mlapa played the entire 90 minutes, while midfielder Sebastian Rudy was replaced in the dying minutes. Boris Vukcevic, who has recently returned from a long term injury, was in the matchday squad but did not make an appearance. There was, however, a late cameo for Kevin Volland, currently playing at TSV 1860 Munich on loan from Hoffenheim. He is due to return to the club in the summer.

Malta 2-1 Lichtenstein

Sandro Wieser was in action for Lichtenstein last night, playing the full 90 minutes as they fell to a 2-1 defeat in Malta.

Brazil 2-1 Bosnia

Sejad Salihovic and Bosnia were on the end of an unlucky 2-1 defeat to five-time World Cup winners Brazil in Switzerland on Tuesday evening. Real Madrid defender Marcelo put Brazil ahead in the fourth minute, but ex-Hoffenheim marksman Vedad Ibisevic equalised ten minutes later. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Glasgow Rangers left back Sasa Papac unfortunately put into his own net shortly before full time. Salihovic featured for the last eleven minutes of the match, when he replaced Ibisevic.

Burundi 2-1 Zimbabwe

Knowledge Musona scored a goal himself but could not stop Zimbabwe falling to a 2-1 loss against Burundi.

England U21s 4-0 Belgium U21s

Goalkeeper Koen Casteels and the Belgium U21s were heavily beaten by England U21s in Middlesbrough last night. England have all but guaranteed qualification for next year's European Championships. For Belgium it will be a more difficult challenge, but they are still in a good position for a play-off place at least.

USA U23s 2-0 Mexico U23s

USA's U23 Olympic team were 2-0 victors over Mexico last night. Hoffenheim's Joseph-Claude Gyau started the game and was replaced thirteen minutes from time.

Turkey U21s 0-0 Denmark U21s

Defender Jannik Vestergaard, enjoying a fine run of form in the 1899 first team recently, was in the Denmark U21 team which was held to a goalless draw with Turkey last night. The 19-year-old played the full game.
