Babbel promises: “We won't repeat that kind of display”

Two days after the desolate performance of TSG in their cup exit in Berlin, the pain is still raw for all those involved. Last Saturday, Markus Babbel's side lost 4-0 and were taken to the cleaners by fourth division team Berliner AK in the first round of the German Cup after an inexplicable display. “After a defeat like this, we simply cannot ignore the result and we must address it. We are obviously going to be criticised, but we must get back on our feet and show the form that we demonstrated in pre-season”, Babbel said after the game.

The rebuilding started on the journey home on Saturday evening, and continued through to training on Sunday morning. The players themselves struggled to find an explanation for their embarrassing performance. TSG captain Tim Wiese, who made a few great saves but also a poor impression with the fourth goal, spoke on behalf of his teammates on Sunday: “We all know that it was a very weak and unacceptable performance. We have to apologise to the fans, especially having travelled almost 400 miles only to end up being severely disappointed.” Wiese also said that the team will make it up to the fans.

The coaching team of Markus Babbel and Rainer Widmayer now have a job to do, with match analysis bound to pick up some weaknesses in the side, particularly in defence. “We will do some rigorous analysis and go through everything with the team, right down to the last detail. The lads have got some intensive training sessions ahead of them. I can promise that we won't repeat that kind of display in the Bundesliga opener in Gladbach”, confirmed Babbel. There's not long to go: The Kraichgau club start their Bundesliga campaign with an away game this coming Saturday the 25 August at 15.30 CET. The opponents are Champions League qualifiers Borussia Mönchengladbach.
