"100 percent concentration on Hamburg”

Frank Kramer, who up until now has been in charge of Hoffenheim's U23s, has taken charge of the first team after the departure of Markus Babbel. The interim manager has been talking to achtzehn99.de about his first day of work and his first impressions in his ‘new' workplace.

Frank, what are your impressions after training with the team for the first time?

The players have impressed me with their concentration; they were very attentive. They were driven when it came to discussing playing styles and had the necessary aggression in their work. That's how I want to present myself as well.

Is it different training with the higher paid players rather than the youngsters?

Yes, there are differences, but that's to be expected. You have to step in more with the youngsters to correct them. You also have to be more of an educator. There are certain things you expect of the first team so you only need to make fine adjustments in training. The focus is more on tactics.

What have you picked out as the things that need improving in the side?

Well, we've all seen the statistics when is comes to set-pieces, so we can't just ignore that. We'll work a lot more on it and we've made a start already in the first training session. On top of that we have to find a stable system. The team has struggled to keep one after suffering setbacks in matches. That's something else we'll be working on in the coming days.

What system do you like to play? Do you have a favoured tactic or philosophy?

It's important that the team defend aggressively and change our momentum quickly when we win possession. It sounds simple but for that to work, every part of the team has to be working at 100 percent. Each player has to do their job with great discipline.

Will you be changing personnel for the game in Hamburg?

I can't say at this stage. I will look at the players more specifically in training and weigh up all the options before deciding who is ready to take on the difficult task in Hamburg on Friday. Sebastian Rudy will be back after his suspension. That's good news because it gives me one more option to choose from.

It's a tough business. A few days ago you were part of Markus Babbel's training team and now you're in his shoes. How does that feel?

To be completely honest, it's doesn't feel good. I worked really well with Markus Babbel and Rainer Widmayer; we had a very good relationship. I rang them up before deciding to take over. They both encouraged me to do it. It was helpful for me and now when I'm on the pitch and working with the team, everything else is forgotten and I can have 100 percent concentration on Hamburg.
