Tanner apologises for Zambrano confusion

The potential transfer of defender Carlos Zambrano, who is currently on loan at St. Pauli, to 1899 Hoffenheim has led to a rift between the Kraichgau outfit and DFB Pokal winners Schalke 04. The main source of conflict is that the Royal Blues were not properly informed of 1899's interest in the Zambrano, who played under new 1899 head coach Holger Stanislawski last season. It has been an obvious source of irritation for the Sinsheim side and those involved. Here's what manager Ernst Tanner had to say about their approach to the situation:

"We want to express our regret and apologise to FC Schalke 04 for the misunderstanding that has arisen regarding our desire to bring Carlos Zambrano to 1899 Hoffenheim. We have talked at length with FC St. Pauli about a possible transfer and had outlined an agreement for the player. However, it seems that we made the same mistake as St. Pauli, which meant both clubs were assuming the other would make Schalke 04 aware of the situation. Of course, for the part we played in this miscommunication, we apologise to Schalke 04 wholeheartedly."

"I would also like to take the opportunity to reiterate that neither FC St. Pauli nor 1899 Hoffenheim had the intention of harming the third party involved in the deal."
