Next opponents: Freiburg show signs of life

The joy was plain to see last weekend as the SC Freiburg recorded their first win in 12 matches with a 1-0 victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05.

After two poor home performances against Hertha Berlin and Hannover, SCF put in a far better showing against the Nullfünfers, inspired by their narrow defeat to league leaders Bayern München the previous week. A long range strike from Johannes Flum (10') - his first ever Bundesliga goal - was enough for Freiburg to keep their hopes of survival alive at the badenova Stadion. "This win was an important boost for our confidence," said keeper Simon Pouplin after the match, while coach Robin Dutt was delighted with his side's performance: "It was a special win because we've had a difficult few weeks. We looked a different proposition altogether."

Looking at the Freiburg's fixtures for the rest of the season, the Baden-Württemberg outfit are more than capable of staving off the drop with matches against fellow strugglers Nürnberg and Bochum, as well as a trip to Köln all on the menu. Borussia Dortmund provide the opposition on the final day of the season, and the SCF faithful will be hoping that the Yellow-Blacks have already sewn up their Europa League qualification by then and will give the hosts an easy ride as a result. For the Nürnberg game, away fans have been banned for setting off fireworks in during their match at Bochum at the end of February, so the omens are good for Freiburg to avoid relegation into the second tier after just one season.
