Lucky Hoffenheim snatch a point

A late Mats Hummels own goal was enough for 1899 Hoffenheim to snatch a rather fortunate point in a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park.

Match report

With chances at a premium in the opening 45 minutes it was Dortmund who looked the more likely, Lucas Barrios dragging wide from distance early on before Neven Subotic headed a Tamas Hajnal corner comfortably over Timo Hildebrand's bar. However, aside from a couple of unfortunate injuries to BVB's Nuri Sahin and Mohamad Zidan respectively, the first half ended without major incident and the sides went in level at the break.

In the second period it was again the hosts who were fastest out of the blocks as Barrios saw his 47th minute strike disallowed for offside. That sprang 1899 into life, though just as they began to put their first bout of pressure on, Nelson Valdez headed in a Kevin Großkreutz cross from the left to give Jürgen Klopp's side the lead.

A relatively tame encounter ensued with little in the way of goalscoring opportunities. Sejad Salihovic sent a free kick from just outside the box well over the bar, while Dede and Barrios both saw chances sail past the target at the other end for Dortmund.

Just as it seemed the match was over for Hoffenheim, Carlos Eduardo sent in a teasing cross from the left which the unwitting Mats Hummels turned past Roman Weidenfeller into his own net with just two minutes to go. It was a bitter pill for the hosts to swallow as they miss out on the chance to go third, but an important, if a tad undeserved, point for Hoffenheim as they attempt to make absolutely certain of their Bundesliga survival.

Quotes

Timo Hildebrand
We're happy to have got the point. We've had a bad few weeks, we all know that. We weren't organised well enough for the goal we conceded and the equaliser was our best attack of the match.

Ralf Rangnick
You could see that the team was up for the fight today. We were never going to be brilliant today but we did our best to put in a solid defensive display and nick a point. It was important for us to get the point. Now we need to try to get back to our old form.

Dede
The draw is a tough one to swallow. We played so well and then conceded right at the end. We can't dwell on it too much though, we need to look forward. We were very unlucky with the injuries to Sahin and Zidan.
