Simunic: “I have the greatest respect for the national side”

Josip Simunic's chances of qualifying for the World Cup finals are edging away. The Croatian national side now has only a theoretical chance of qualification following the Ukraine's 1-0 victory over England on Saturday. Croatia are relying on a victory for the Ukraine on Wednesday over Andorra, who currently have no points in World Cup qualifying. In any case, Croatia must win in Kasachstan to retain any hope of making the play-offs.

National trainer Slaven Bilic has further worries following the suspensions of Simunic (70 caps) and team mate Ivica Krizanac from the national side. Simunic would have missed the game anyway due to a calf injury, but still travelled with the national team to offer support and experience. On Saturday Simunic returned to Hoffenheim. "At the moment I have no comment on the subject. I have the greatest respect for the national side and they should be left to prepare in peace for the game on Wednesday. I wish them all the best. After the game I'm sure there will be time to resolve any issues. Now I'm completely focused on 1899 Hoffenheim and the next game in Bremen. Out of respect for my club and my team mates I don't want to burden anyone needlessly with this story."
